What are Reed Diffusers, and How Do They Work?

It is common these days to walk into someone's home and be greeted by a scented candle's exquisite, soothing fragrance. But, in some cases, you may be surprised that there aren't any candles around. Instead, you see a small glass bottle containing a bright-colored substance with a few sticks protruding from it. This incredibly fragrant mystery object is what we call a reed diffuser

What are Reed Diffusers, and How Do They Work

What Are Reed Diffusers?

Reed diffusers are small glass bottles containing a brightly colored substance from which sticks protrude. These diffusers are a popular form of aromatherapy. They are commonly used to achieve a better scent in your home or office. In addition to their fragrant aromas, they come in various elegant designs to give any space a stylish touch.

In this post, we'll tell you everything you need to know about reed diffusers, how to use them, and how they compare to scented candles in terms of appearance, effectiveness, and practicality.

How do Reed Diffusers work?

Reed diffusers work by releasing scented essential oils into the air. They absorb the oil scent in the reeds, which leads to evaporation, dispersing it into the air. When you look at a reed diffuser, you will notice they all contain three main components: high-quality reeds, chic glass bottles, and aromatic scented oil.

The aromatic oil is placed in the glass container of the reed diffuser. The reed sticks, made from natural rattan reeds, are also inserted into the container with one end immersed in the fragrance oil and the other exposed to the air. The rods then absorb the oil and send the fragrance into the surrounding air by evaporating the scented oil. Because of the constant evaporation that occurs, fresh and exquisite aromas fill the air and create a perfumed and relaxing environment.

How to Refill Reed Diffusers

Refilling your reed diffusers is made simple. All you need to do is fill your container with more scented oil and replace the reeds with clean, unused ones. At Smells, we have infused oils that you can use not only in your reed diffusers but also in oil burners and electric diffusers.

Tips on How to Use a Reed Diffuser

Reed Diffusers are easy to use and add a spectacular scent to your home. Here are the best tips to use them correctly:

  • We recommend turning the reeds over once a week so that the scent is not lost and the reeds can absorb it again. Remember that the more you turn the reeds, the more the oil will be consumed, which impacts the oil's duration expectancy.
  • Check that the container has more than half of the oil in it for better performance, and make sure that the reeds do not overflow when you put them in.
  • Place the correct number of reeds; the more you put, the stronger the essence of the scent in your home will be. We recommend between 6 to 8 as too little will not release enough smell, and too many can overwhelm the room.
  • After introducing the reeds, you will have to give them a few minutes to absorb the oil and turn them over in the bottle so that the fragrance can release into the air.

Benefits of the reed diffusers

Various incredible benefits come with reed diffusers. Here are a few for your knowledge.

  • Reed Diffusers have a continuous scent without the need to plug them in or light them with fire. This can help to reduce the risk of fires and save energy.
  • They have a long life, lasting up to 6 months, but changing them after 3 months is recommended for better performance.
  • Reed diffusers are non-toxic and do not contain alcohol in their composition.

How to Care for Your Reed Diffuser

The reeds must be changed from time to time, as they can only last up to 6 months. However, after the first month, the aroma can lose strength since the reeds are in constant contact with air, dust, and dirt, causing them to wear out. We recommend changing the reeds every 3 months at the most.

What Can Determine the Quality of the Fragrance?

Airflow is an important variable for the scent to circulate throughout the room in which it is located. Therefore, it is vital to consider the size of the room when choosing how many reeds to use and how many diffusers to have out at a time.

For example, a small diffuser with 6 or 8 rods is sufficient for a small area, such as a bathroom or entryway. Larger areas may require more rods and a larger diffuser. Also, avoid placing the diffusers near appliances such as air conditioners and doors/windows that open to the outside. The scent can escape the room through these passages, leaving you with much less potency.

Remember: Keep your diffuser out of direct sunlight, as heat makes the oil evaporate much faster. You should also be mindful of little ones around the diffusers, as they may be at risk of trying to ingest the oil.
